Two EU Parliament Committees Narrowly Recommend Rejecting ACTA
The ITRE and JURI committees both voted to reject the ACTA agreement |
This morning two committees in the European Parliament voted on the ACTA agreement. We who are opposed to ACTA won both votes, but the votes were quite close.
In ITRE, the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy, the draft opinion by Pirate MEP Amelia Andersdotter, which recommended rejecting the ACTA treaty, was carried with 31 votes in favour, 25 against, and 1 abstention.
In JURI, the Legal Affairs Committee (where I am a member), the draft opinion by Conservative MEP Marielle Gallo, which recommended giving consent to ACTA, was rejected with 10 votes in favour, 12 against, and 2 abstentions. According to the procedure laid down before the vote by the JURI committee chairman, this will be interpreted as the JURI committee recommending the rejection of ACTA.
This afternoon LIBE, the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, will also be voting on ACTA. That vote is also expected to be close, but we of course hope that LIBE will recommend rejecting ACTA as well.
Stay tuned for more information.
